Look Up Please

In a lesson at church I was handed a slip of paper with a scripture reference on it.  Next to the reference the teacher wrote "Look up please".  This was an instruction for me to look up the scripture reference, but it spoke to me in a much more significant way, and in about a minute I had this poem scribbled out.

When you think that life's too hard...
Look up please.
When trials come into your life, when your heart's conflicted and full of strife...
Look up please.
When you feel that you're alone, when none of your friends call your phone, when childhood friends fade once you've grown...
Look up please.
Bow your head when you're on your knees, but when you're moving on your feet, don't forget the friend that never leaves...
Look up please.

The Undeliverable Message

My heart has no ears
It makes things complicated
I don't know how to tell it
That she's not coming back

My heart has no ears
So it can't get the message
That hope is futile
Nothing's gray, all is Black

My heart has no ears
So it ignores my screams
I'm telling it to move on
But it holds on for dear life

My heart has no ears
And even though it's broken
It has the false idea
That she might end up my wife

Yes I'm sorry I'm still holding on
I've told my heart a thousand times
But my heart won't listen to me or you
Because it has no ears.

A two edged sword

A two edged sword, freshly made,
never before tainted, a perfect blade.
She kept it on her at all time,
when I was hers and she was mine.
Maybe she had not planned to use it,
but things can happen to make her lose it
and one late night it left it's sheath,
it sliced through my soul from top to beneath.
Oh how I wish that this were true,
so I'd be dead and not thinking of you,
cuz never deeper has any sword cut,
then those four words, "I love you.. But...."

Who is she?

Who is she? I asked the stander-by with whom she associates oft.
“Why she’s strong and firm” was their reply and they were in no way wrong

Who is she? I asked her friend with whom she was most close
“She is a giver, she’s gracious” they said and I say that it is so

Who is she? I asked the man with whom she’s eternally wed
“She’s the most lovely girl in the whole world” why yes, he is correct.

If you ask ME who she is I have all those views and more,
To me she’s strong, to me she’s gracious, to me she’s lovely for sure
But I’ve seen her cry when I misbehave
I’ve seen her on her knees when I’ve gone astray
I’ve seen her flaws, her human side, I’ve seen her when she’s ill
I’ve seen her yell, I’ve seen her scream, I’ve kinda seen it all
But When she cries, I cry too, and my priorities rearrange
When she’s on her knees, I fall on mine too, and ask for the strength to change
When I see her flaws, I tell myself that I don’t have to be perfect
And when she’s mad I know what I did, was definitely not worth it
She pushes me in every way to be a better son
Who is she? She’s the greatest person alive,
She is my loving mom.

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you! Thanks so much for all you have ever done for me and all that you still do for me.  I know I haven't always been the best at expressing my gratitude, but I really am eternally grateful that I have a mom as wonderful as you.

Word Art

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but who really determined that?
Personally I find it hard to believe, a claim not based in studies or fact
For can a picture of a yellowed wood, convey the heart of Robert Frost?
Can one painted work describe Juliette’s love how she had it and how it’s lost?
Would a sketch of green ham tell the story of Sam and inspire new endeavors?
Can a snapshot of Pooh bear and Christopher Robin tell of a friendship that last forever?
Yet museums still charge lots of money just to look,
While libraries beg for you to come take a book.
And I want the world to see what I’ve always known in my heart

That words, as much as paintings, are an amazing form of art.

Spoonerism

"WAVE THE SAILS!" Jimmy yelled. "Have it your way" the captain replied.  Jimmy started crying.  It was an unfortunate spoonerism. He really wanted to say, "Save the Whales.” We saw him screaming from the boat that was drifting farther and farther out to sea, the sails waving in the wind.

Spoonerism
  1. the transposition of initial or other sounds of words, usually by  accident, as in a blushing crow for a crushing blow.

Panglossian

Prince Stephen grieved in the dungeon.  His father was slain and his mother’s screams still echoed in his ears.  “We’ll get the kingdom back” chimed the little servant boy who was arrested with the prince.  This initially annoyed Stephen, but with time, he came to appreciate the boy’s Panglossian comments.

Panglossian
adjective
characterized by or given to extreme optimism, especially in the face of unrelieved hardship or  adversity.
